Yesterday I learned that the word "snob" actually came from England/France. In elite private schools, you had to be of noble blood to be admitted. But some people would lie to get in, or try to fake being noble to be accepted into the school. (I'm not sure what they would do specifically, make get illegal papers or something? i'm not sure).
