Yesterday I learned that the word "snob" actually came from England/France. In elite private schools, you had to be of noble blood to be admitted. But some people would lie to get in, or try to fake being noble to be accepted into the school. (I'm not sure what they would do specifically, make get illegal papers or something? i'm not sure). These people were called "sans noblesse" (without nobility) because they were fake, they were phonies, and by lying they were not noble of the heart. "Sans noblesse" became "sans noblesse" thus shortened to "snob," which now has the connotation of someone who is not noble of the heart, thinks too highly of themselves, etc. Cool huh?
